The Bourne Ultimatum/La Vengeance dans la Peau

En attendant que mes pilules anti-nausées fassent effet, laissez moi vous parler de la raison de mon petit malaise actuel: La Vengeance dans la Peau (The Bourne ultimatum). Prenez Le Fugitif, mélangez-y Casino Royale et vous avez, selon moi, une idée de ce film. Au départ ma soeur avait pensé voir Les Simpson: Le Film mais j'ai interrompu en disant que le dernier Bourne était sur les écrans et ma soeur a conclu qu'il serait probablement mieux de le voir sur grand écran. Et c'est ainsi que maintenant je me sens comme lorsque je prend un grand moccacino chez Starbucks ou en débarquant d'une montagne russe démentielle.

L'histoire est simplissime: Jason Bourne est à la recherche de son passé et pendant deux heures nous le voyons se battre (sans doute la meilleure scène de combat à mains nues que j'ai vu), faire des poursuites à pied ou en voiture (encore une fois démentielles) avec des cascades époustouflantes, et les retournements de situation sont, dans le contexte de l'histoire, tout à fait crédibles. Heureusement on nous ménage le coeur en placeant entre les scènes d'action des moments d'intimité où les personnages prennent le temps d'expliquer ce qui se passe mais où la tension règne quand même. Je ne faisait pas semblant lorsque j'ai écrit que j'ai pris des pilules anti-nausées: ce film a été tourné caméra à l'épaule et à moment donné j'ai bloqué ma vue afin de pouvoir reprendre mes repères. Je ne sais pas comment les opérateurs ont fait pour tenir le coup.

Le réalisateur Paul Greengrass sait comment tourné un film d'action mais il sait aussi comment nous donner l'impression d'entrer dans l'intimité des personnages, nous donnant l'impression que soit on est face à face à eux ou que l'on est en train d'espionner la scène. Il place aussi un peu de commentaire politique, pas trop difficile à trouver mais qui ne nuisent aucunement au déroulement du film. J'avais évité de voir son dernier film, United 93 parce que je ne voulais pas revivre les événement du 11 septembre 2001 de l'intérieur mais je crois que je vois me laissé teneré. Je préparerai ma boîte de kleenex.

La Vengeance dans la Peau est une leçon de ce que devrait être un film d'action: une part de suspense, beaucoup de montée d'adrénaline, des cascades crédibles, et surtout les invraisemblances ne doivent pas sauter au yeux(pas une fois est-ce que Bourne prend la peine de se mettre au moins une tuque pour changer son visage mais on s'en fout). Maintenant si vous m'excusez, je dois aller me reposer, ma chambre tourne encore.

While I wait for my anti-nausea pills to take effect, let me talk about the reason for my feeling like I'd just stepped of a two hours roller coaster ride: The Bourne Ultimatum. Take The Fugitive, toss in some Casino Royale and you may begin to understand how awesome (yes I wrote awesome) that movie was. Basically, it was nothing short of a massive adrenaline shot, not unlike what I usually feel after drinking a Grande sized Starbucks mochacino or coming off the Top Gun ride at Canada's Wonderland.

The story is simple: Jason Bourne searches for the truth of his pass. And that is literally what he does over the just under 2 hours this movie lasts, pausing in between beat downs (the best I've seen on screen so far), car chases, foot chases, double crosses and other fake outs to do a bit of chatting with other people so that we know what's going on and basically those scenes are there to give your heart a semblance of a bit of a break even though you know you're just bidding time before the action picks again . I am not kidding when I said I've taken some nausea pills: the movie was shot mostly with a hand held camera and really I don't know how the operator managed to keep up with the what was going on. At some point I blocked my view not because I couldn't stomach what I was seeing but because the images were zooming so fast that my brain couldn't keep up.

Paul Greengrass, the director, knows how to shoot an action movie but he also knows how to render the intimacy and the close quarters in which part of the movie is set. When you see a character looking at another one, you really have the feeling that either your rudely eavesdropping or that you're actually conversating with Jason or whomever else you're looking at. He also throws in some political commentary if you want to look for it. I stayed away from his last movie United 93 because I didn't want to relive 9/11 from the inside but I think I will now. I think I better brace myself.

The Bourne Ultimatum is everything a good action movie should be: lots of suspense, lots of adrenaline, believeable stunts. Ok you may think that if Bourne had bothered to put on a hat or a fake moustache he wouldn't have so much trouble chasing him around but then you probably won't notice and beside, we'll leave those for Mission: Impossible. Now if you don't mind, the room is still spinning, I have to go lie down.
