My friends and I went out last night at the Jello-Bar, notorious as a human smokehouse. Since I wear my hair in dreadlocks, it absorbs odours easy, and bars were a particular problem. A month ago I went to a sports bar and grill house and when I got in my car for the drive back, I was convinced someone had smoked in the car until I realized the smell was emanating from me. All this to say that on Day 3 of the official smoke ban (it's actually the fourth night since the ban in effect on the 30th at midnight) the air was clear, the music was loud, the people were shaking their bonbons and I came out of the reeking of the only thing one should smell of after rubbing up and down another human being: sweat. The only disadvantage to the ban was all that trafic of people coming in and out of the bar and somehow I always seem to be in the way. Do I think that the smoke ban will be catastrophic? Having in bars in Toronto and Cornwall a few times and going to restaurants in Ontario were their are no smoking sections, I'd say no. People adapt. The cover charges will probably go up to compensate for the diminished sale of boozed but after coughing up 25$ US to get in a club once in NYC that was packed (before the Canadian dollar went soaring high), I think the bar owners will survive.

Mes amis et moi sommes sortis hier soir au Jello-Bar, un bar notoire pour le nuage bleu qui y flotte. Vu que je porte mes cheveux en rasta, ils absorbent les odeurs facilement et lorsque je rentrais dans la coquille de ma douche par la suite, j'avais un rappel brutal de mes dernières activités. Il y a un mois, je suis allé dans un resto-bar sportif et lorsque j'ai embarqué dans mon véhicule pour rentrer, j'étais certaine que le précédent occupant y avait fumé jusqu'à je me rende compte que c'était moi. Donc, en cette 4e soirée depuis la mise en vigueur de l'interdit de fumer, l'air était pur, la musique aussi forte qu'à l'habitude, ça grouillait sur la piste de danse et j'en suis sortie en empestant de la seule chose que l'on devrait sentir après s'être frottée à d'autres humains toute une soirée: la sueur. Le seul désavantage de l'interdit est tout ce va-et-vient causé par ceux qui vont dehors assouvir leur vice. Est-ce que l'interdit de fumer sera la perte des restos et bars? Bien sûr que non si je me fis à ma fréquentations des bars à Cornwall et Toronto ainsi que les restaurants en Ontario où l'interdit de fumer est en vigueur depuis belle lurette. Nous nous adapterons. Les prix d'entrée seront probablement plus chers pour compenser le diminution due la vente d'alcool mais après avoir payer 25$ US pour rentrer dans un bar remplit à craquer à New-York (avant l'envolée du dollar canandien), je ne m'inquiète pas trop pour l'avenir des tenanciers de bars.
